Will we descend and live like animals? Be placid and self-contained, with a will that is a light rather than fire, whose haven is not power but truth, whose truth is guided by reason and compassion. Love cannot exist in captivity, as beauty turns to rubble and the sun is blotted out by the pungent smoke of lust and greed. We must not allow the evil of power to steal what wisdom has begun. We stand naked with this truth, weeping and asking ourselves how we can be like this. We wave our white flag, cringing as we duck our heads beneath the shrapnel. I cannot teach you how to soar but I can show you how to live.
We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light – Plato
