On this day in 1000 CE, Leifur Eiriksson set foot in Vinland, possibly at L’Anse aux Meadows, on the northern tip of Newfoundland, becoming the first white person in the Americas. The indigenous people had already been here for more than ten thousand years.

The Norsemen called them ‘Skraelings’. They didn’t get along too well and after a while the white people left and didn’t return for another 500 years.
